TeamXbox reports that former Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain will appear as a playable character in the upcoming Guitar Hero 5. Gamers will be able to strum and sing as the iconic musician through two hits from Nirvana's magnum opus, Nevermind: the album version of legendary track "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and a never-before-released live version of the hit single "Lithium." While Nirvana's music has appeared in video games before -- including both Guitar Hero and competitor Rock Band -- neither franchise has managed to secure the license to "Teen Spirit" until now.
A big deal? Yeah, you could say that, or you could let Tim Riley, Vice President of Music Affairs for Activision, say it for you.
"Kurt Cobain is one of the most recognizable frontmen in rock 'n' roll history and it’s an honor to have two of Nirvana’s masterpieces included in Guitar Hero 5," he said in a press release. "This is the first time the original recording of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' has ever been licensed in an entertainment property and we’re thrilled to offer Guitar Hero fans exclusive access to the unreleased live version of 'Lithium.'"
Since his untimely death in 1994, Cobain been the subject of several book and film projects, most notably the 2002 biography "Heavier than Heaven" (pegged to become a biopic with Courtney Love serving as executive producer) and Gus Van Sant's haunting 2005 film Last Days. This will mark his first official appearance as an digitized game avatar.
The influential songwriter joins Johnny Cash, Carlos Santana, Garbage's Shirley Manson and Muse's Matt Bellamy as in-game artists exclusive to Guitar Hero 5.
